The Story Of ASQMA

Founded in July 2009, the Australian Square Metre Association (ASQMA) is a passionate, community-driven hub for enthusiasts of the 22 & 30‑square‑metre yacht. Over the past one and half decade, our group has fostered a thriving online gathering place—celebrating vintage vessels, forging lasting friendships, and helping to restore five beloved yachts back to their shimmering, varnished existence of glory.

From nostalgic archives to lively rally updates and richly detailed yacht profiles. ASQMA is a go-to destination for Square Metre Yacht aficionados around the globe. Guided by the spirit of camaraderie and preservation, we aim to honour sailing heritage through storytelling, restoration, and renewal—always ready to welcome new members into our vibrant fold.

"Once you’ve sailed on a squaremeter, it stays with you. There’s a grace to them that’s hard to put into words. And once that magic gets hold of you, it never really lets go."

His Restorations:

About acting & honorary president Manfred Speicher

Manfred Speicher is the co-founding president of the Australian Square Metre Yacht Association. Born beside Lake Constance (Bodensee) in southern Germany and living in Australia, Manfred has spent a lifetime shaped by yachts. Specially the beauty, vintage yachts carry.

His early years were influenced by the long, slender wooden yachts that sailed the European lakes, including the square metre yachts (Schaerenkreuzer). Their graceful lines, fine timbers, and understated speed, left an imprint that never faded. Years later, living in Australia, Manfred felt the call to return to the fire which kindled the passion. What began as quiet admiration evolved into an enduring commitment to restoration, documentation and reconnection.

Through his leadership, ASQMA has become a living record of the square metre class in Australian waters. His restoration of Bacchante, one of the oldest 30m² yachts in the Southern Hemisphere, reflects the care, he brings to every hull, every email, every photo shared by another custodian. He has helped trace lost yachts, supported new owners, and built bridges between enthusiasts in Australia, Europe, and beyond.

Manfred’s greatest joy has always been found in the stories. The history of each yacht. The faces behind each restoration. The quiet passion of those, who keep these yachts sailing. Every message received, every new photograph, every name remembered adds to a growing legacy that he continues to protect with both hands and heart.

ASQMA is a tribute to heritage, a celebration of form and spirit, and a gathering place for those who understand the quiet pull of timber and canvas. Manfred’s hope is, that this site becomes not just a reference, but a way to bring people together. If you’ve found your way here, you’re already part of the story.

Our website is home to a rich archive of yacht profiles, event updates, restoration stories, and historical records. Whether you’re an owner, restorer, sailor, or simply an admirer, ASQMA offers a welcoming space to share experiences, learn from one another, and celebrate the legacy of the Square Metre class.

Beyond the online community, ASQMA organizes rallies, meet-ups, and sailing events that strengthen bonds between members and bring these extraordinary yachts together on the water. Each event is a reminder that while the boats are beautiful, it’s the people who keep their spirit alive.

At ASQMA, we believe in preserving the past while embracing the present—honoring the tradition of Square Metre Yachts and ensuring their stories will inspire generations to come.

Over the years, ASQMA has become a trusted hub for knowledge, inspiration, and connection. We’ve helped restore and return more than thirty yachts to their former glory, with each restoration breathing new life into a piece of maritime history. From varnished decks that gleam in the sun to sleek lines that cut gracefully through the water, these boats are more than vessels—they are living heritage.
